Town to light up for Christmas

AS Christmas approaches, Kempsey Chamber of Commerce is ready with a stack of decorations and lights ready to light up the town.

Chamber president Dean Irvine said the chamber had bought some additional Christmas lights which would be displayed in West Kempsey and the CBD area.

“Shop owners have started decorating their stores and getting ready for a big Christmas season,” he said.

“Every year the Chamber looks to improve and update the decorations and we thought lights would be a good addition.

“Retailers very excited about this Christmas and they are getting in and decorating their stores, making it a good opportunity for shoppers to shop here in Kempsey.”

And for those who think it’s awfully early for Christmas decorations to be going up in all the stores: “It’s about this time of year we get the decorations up so it hasn’t changed,” said Mr Irvine.

“A special thank you to Neil and Margaret Burke and Country Energy who are coordinating putting up the decorations.

“Santa will be visiting Kempsey in the coming months and he will be handing out lollies, walking the streets and be available for photos – further details will be published at end of November.”

County Gifts and Flowers owner manager Judy Hudson said the retail community in Kempsey was feeling optimistic for the coming Christmas season.

“There are a lot of new faces coming in to shop,” she said.

“You notice things like that when you are in business.

“That means to me that there are a lot of new shoppers about, new people moving to the town meaning the area is growing.

“We have had some quiet weeks but the Kempsey economy is fairly stable.”

Mrs Hudson said Christmas decorations were a big seller at this time of year.

“And I am finding people are so much more into Christmas now than they used to be say 10 years ago,” she said.

“People will often buy some new decorations each year.”
