Coast city plans parade despite hurricane damage

7 Nov. 2005  •  Christmas News

Hurricane Katrina won’t stop the city’s Christmas parade, Gautier officials say.

“We expect that participation will be down for this year’s parade, but I’m hoping that residents will spread the word among each other to help us keep that from happening,” coordinator Charles Simpson said.

He said the eighth annual event will add two new categories this year, including best decorated pickup truck and motorcycle. Awards will also be given for the best marching groups, best spirit, best-decorated float and best overall.

Last year’s parade had 56 units.

Residents are encouraged to enter even if they do have elaborate decorations for their floats because of Katrina.

“They can just decorate their pickup truck, convertible or motorcycle, get some candy and beads, and help bring a Christmas smile to our community,” Simpson said.

Simpson, who will serve as parade marshal, said he hopes to have bands from Gautier and Ocean Springs high schools marching as well.
